Edgewood, Benedictine's Roberts Capture Women's Titles at NACC XC Championships

WEST ALLIS, Wis. (naccsports.org) --- Edgewood College repeated as women's team champion, while Benedictine University senior Emma Roberts (Sandwich, Ill.) capped her career with a third-straight individual crown Saturday at the 2019 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) Cross Country Championships Saturday at Greenfield Park.

Edgewood, which finished with a league-best five runners in the top 15, totaled 47 points for its third title overall (2015, 2018, 2019). Milwaukee School of Engineering was second with 72 points, while Concordia University Chicago edged host Wisconsin Lutheran College, 97-98, for third place.

Concordia University Wisconsin (124) was fifth, followed by Benedictine University (150), Dominican University (158), Aurora University (163), Lakeland University (254), Mount Mary University (306), Rockford University (309) and Alverno College (349). Illinois Institute of Technology and Marian University fielded incomplete teams.

Roberts, who led virtually from start-to-finish, covered the sloppy 6-kilometer course in 24:34.58, nearly one minute faster than runner-up Molly Cullinane of Concordia Chicago (25:28.47) and third-place finisher Rachel Ruona of MSOE (25:31.00).

Benedictine's Charlotte Youell was fourth (25:37.42), followed Edgewood's Taylor Mair in fifth (25:58.45) and Clara Berning in sixth (26:00.21). MSOE's Kendall Marks (seventh, 26:10.09), Wisconsin Lutheran's Mikaela Sullivan (eighth, 26:13.73), Concordia Wisconsin's LaNea Bartel (ninth, 26:15.39) and Edgewood's Lauren Kane (10th, 26:30.93) rounded out the top 10.

Also named to the All-Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Women's Cross Country Team as a top-15 finisher were Edgewood's Madi Hanseder (11th, 26:48.02) and Rachel Ehrhart (15th, 27:14.86), Dominican's Mary Eterno (12th, 26:59.32), Wisconsin Lutheran's Brooke Graesslin (13th, 27:02.71) and Concordia Chicago's Alyssa Taglia (14th, 27:13.61).

As individual champion, Roberts also received NACC Women's Cross Country Runner of the Year honors for the third time. Sullivan was named NACC Women's Cross Country Freshman of the Year as the top-placed true freshman in the meet.

Edgewood's Bethany Brewster was named NACC Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year for the second straight year and third time overall after leading the Eagles to this year's title.

The majority of NACC programs will take next weekend off before competing at the NCAA Division III Midwest Region Championship slated for Saturday, Nov. 16 at Lake Breeze Golf Course in Winneconne, Wisconsin. The 2019 NCAA Division III Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships will be held the following Saturday (Nov. 23) at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Kentucky.
