MILWAUKEE, Wis. (naccsports.org) --- The 14th edition of the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference's "Cans Across the Conference" effort concluded recently with the league's 13 member institutions collecting 36,466 items.
Dominican University topped this year's standings with 8,894 items to secure the traveling trophy for the first time. Alverno College, which had held the traveling trophy for the past nine years, was second with 8,863 items, while Edgewood College was third with 6,098 items to round out the top three.
Since the conference's inception in 2006, the members of the NACC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) has organized "Cans Across the Conference", doing something together as a conference that helps in each institution's respective community.
SAAC annually organizes the canned food drive as a community service competition amongst the 13 institutions in the conference. Each campus SAAC collects cans and other non-perishable items at their school during October and November to benefit a local charity.
In addition to food items, one dollar donated equals two cans, and toiletries (shampoo, soap, toothpaste, deodorant, etc.) are also counted.
