LISLE, Ill. --- It is with great pleasure that Benedictine University announces the appointment of Paul Zavala to the position of head men's and women's cross country coach.
"I would first like to thank the Director of Athletics, Mark McHorney, as well as the Director of Cross Country and Track & Field, Kevin Paterson, for giving me the opportunity to lead the men's and women's cross country programs," Zavala said. "I am also very excited to assist Coach Paterson's highly successful track & field program and continue the strong tradition of winning at the national level."
Zavala arrives at Benedictine after serving as the head men's and women's cross country coach and track and field coach at Robert Morris University for seven years. Zavala helped produce the most National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) national championship qualifiers and Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) all-conference athletes in Robert Morris history.
Robert Morris rose into a program with a regular expectation to compete nationally under Zavala's guidance. Zavala helped develop an eight-time national champion for Puerto Rico in Mizael Carrera. Carrera won national titles in the 5,000 meters, 10,000 meters, half-marathon and cross country while also competing in the Pan American Cross Country Cup.
Inducted into the Robert Morris Hall of Fame in 2011 as a four-time all-conference choice as an athlete, Zavala is a member of USA Track & Field Athletics, Illinois Track and Cross Country Coaches Association, and U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. He also carries coaching certifications in USA Track & Field Level 1, Level 2-Distance, and Level 2 - Sprint / Hurdles / Relays.
The 2018 season begins on August 31 with the Northern Illinois University Huskie Challenge in DeKalb, Ill.
