HAVEN, Wis. (naccsports.org) --- Aurora University and Edgewood College sit tied atop the standings after the opening round of the NACC Men's Golf Championships after firing matching rounds of 328 on the Irish Course at Whistling Straits Sunday afternoon.
Players from all nine teams battled wind and persistent showers throughout the day in addition to the challenging par-72 layout.
The Spartans and Eagles hold a six-stroke advantage over the rest of the tightly-bunched field as seven of the nine teams are within 16 strokes of the team lead. Concordia University Wisconsin sits third at 334, followed closely by Wisconsin Lutheran College (335), Marian University (340), Lakeland University (341) and Milwaukee School of Engineering (344). Benedictine University (380) and Dominican University (394) round out the team scores.
Wisconsin Lutheran's Stephen Bukielski holds the medalist lead after carding a 3-over 75 despite the poor playing conditions. He was 1-over after a bogey on the par-3 third hole, but finished the front nine with back-to-back birdies to take a 1-under 35 to the back nine. Bukielski posted four bogeys coming in as conditions steadily worsened.
MSOE's Bryce Lindsley, playing in the same group as Bukielski, sits second after an opening-round 78. He matched Bukielski with a pair of birdies on the front but also had two bogeys and a double bogey to go out in 2-over 38. He also posted a 40 coming in.
Edgewood's Josh Hentrich and Aurora's JT Hudson are tied for third after matching 7-over 79s Sunday, which figured to be the low rounds of the day until Bukielski and Lindsley found their way to the scorer's table. Both were in the first wave and were able to avoid the heaviest of showers. The pair both birdied the par-5 14th hole, while Hentrich added a birdie on the 17th hole.
CUW's Dylan Karvala and Aurora's John Torres are tied for fifth after posting 80s, followed by Edgewood's Matthew Davidson and Marian's Jake Sherwood in a tie for seventh with 81s. Marian's Maxwell Dye, Edgewood's Jackson Eversoll and Aurora's Noah Hogue carded 82s to round out the top 10.
Eversoll had three birdies to lead all players in Sunday's opening round.
Monday's second round gets underway at 10:30 a.m. with MSOE, Benedictine and Dominican comprising the first wave. Players representing Wisconsin Lutheran, Marian and Lakeland will follow in the second wave with Edgewood, Aurora and Concordia Wisconsin going off last.
