MILWAUKEE -- Ben Murphy, former Wisconsin Lutheran College football standout, returns to the sidelines to serve as the team's defensive coordinator, head coach Dr. Dennis Miller announced Thursday.
Murphy returns to his alma mater after serving as the defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator at NCAA Division II Northern State University in Aberdeen, S.D., a position he has held since January of 2008.
He worked as a graduate assistant at NSU from January of 2007 to January of 2008 before being promoted to a full-time staff member. Murphy recently obtained his master's degree in educational studies with an emphasis in physical education and administration from Northern State.
"We are excited to have a former player return to our staff," Miller states. "Ben brings great enthusiasm and a deep passion to our program. He has gained a wealth of experience since he has left WLC."
Murphy was a four-year starter (2001-04) on the defensive line for the Warriors. He earned All-MIAA Honorable Mention honors as a senior and was named to the All-MIAA Second Team as a junior. He graduated from WLC in December of 2004 with a bachelor's degree in broad field social sciences and a minor in coaching and later returned to Wisconsin Lutheran in 2006 to serve as video coordinator and defensive line coach.
"I loved my experience at Wisconsin Lutheran College as a player, and when the opportunity arose for me to come back as the defensive coordinator I couldn't pass that up," Murphy says. "The people, atmosphere, location and desire to help young people succeed are second to none and I want to be apart of that. Every person has a place they are proud of - for me that is Wisconsin Lutheran College. I look forward to making a positive difference wherever I can."
Murphy, who was born Feb. 2, 1983 in Green Bay, Wis., and his wife Erin live in Milwaukee.
