MILWAUKEE, Wis. --- For the first time in program history, Concordia University Chicago baseball sits atop both national polls, being a unanimous pick as the top team in the Collegiate Baseball/American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) NCAA Division III Poll and moving up one spot from No. 2 in the D3baseball.com/National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Top 25. Aurora University continues to receive votes in both sets of rankings.
Concordia Chicago (19-1, 8-0 NACC), which has now extended its winning streak to 19 games, received the maximum 480 points and all 16 first-place votes from the coaches, while assuming the top spot in the writers' poll by just two points over last week's No. 1, Christopher Newport. The Cougars received 608 points and 14 of 25 first-place votes to sit just ahead of the Captains (606 points, nine first-place votes). No. 3 Southern Maine and No. 5 Rowan each also picked up a first-place vote.
CUC stepped deeper into league play last weekend, sweeping doubleheaders against Wisconsin Lutheran and Illinois Tech. The Cougars survived a test from the Warriors in the weekend opener, winning 2-1 on a walkoff RBI single by Justin Rodriguez in the bottom of the ninth, but recovered to push across 10 or more runs in the final three games of the weekend.
On the slate for Concordia Chicago are two more NACC doubleheaders - Saturday at home against Concordia Wisconsin and Sunday on the road at Lakeland.
Aurora (18-5, 7-1 NACC) went 3-2 last week, falling to North Central, 5-2, in a midweek nonconference game before rebounding with a doubleheader sweep of MSOE at home Saturday. The Spartans also split with Dominican in a doubleheader postponed to Monday due to inclement weather. Aurora will host Illinois Tech Saturday before traveling to Rockford Sunday.
